The older I get (33), the more I like stuff to be more simple. Let's stop moving the time an hour back and forth. OK?
Follow up on my monitoring question:
Spent the weeking setting up kube-prometheus-stack.
The instance #tootcommunity :mastodon: is fully run by volunteers and we have no other means of income to pay our bills other than people donating. 💰
If you enjoy this instance, please consider doing a one-off donation or setting up something recurring. You'd be helping us a great deal with paying for all the infrastructure. ❤️

I'm looking for monitoring tools for Kubernetes that are easy to deploy, maintain and provide plentiful insights and proper alerts out of the box.
What are you using, why is it awesome or why does it suck? I'd like to know.
A bit more on the piece of code I wrote today.
Using Mastodon's webhook on the account.created event, I'm able to forward some information to the Akismet API for Spam/Ham detection. In my tests today; it seemed to reliably detect spam accounts. After I disable dry-run mode, it's set to immediately suspend the user.
Still need to polish some more. I'll publish it on our Github when it's done.
Coding on a proof of concept to curb spam bots on Mastodon. Will publish the software, if/when it proves itself for #tootcommunity
We’ve been getting a lot of reports for mastodon.top. Until there’s sign of life from their end, we’re limiting their instance to protect our users. Legitimate people on that instance can still be followed and interacted with.
Update: It's undone. Their admin took action.
Good morning everyone. Feeling energised for the start of this new week. Any interesting plans coming up?
Following up on yesterday's little thought experiment, I enabled caching configuration for semi-dynamic endpoints that set `Cache-Control` to public, like readable user endpoints etc.
Happy to notice significant spikes are now handled by the cache, instead of stressing out Ruby. The red line marks where NGINX goes into basically chill-mode and doesn't have to react to these hefty federation fluctuations.
#mastoadmin's that are scraping connection statistics for the streaming endpoint: How many connected clients and channels are you handling and what is your STREAMING_CLUSTER_NUM?
In search for caching rules or config for public API pages in Mastodon. I know unauthenticated paths such as /users/<user> allow for public caching up to 180 seconds according to the Cache-Control header(s).
Did anyone already try to utilise this to lessen the load on the Ruby application?
I'm seeing surges up to 1200% of regular traffic for the same two or three URLs at that point, effectively DDoSing us.
Screenshot is from last night. All requests were made to the same user.
Hey everyone. Just letting you know that in The Netherlands, it's national pancake day. 🥞🇳🇱
Here's a cool little something: I just updated HAProxy with just one click using a combination of DevOps tooling.

Renovate watches new versions of all our dependencies, creates PRs, and once I merge it, ArgoCD automatically deploys it to the cluster.
Bought a MacBook Air M2 for a client today. This thing beats my specced out MacBook Pro 14" M1 Max in various browser benchmarks.
Apple Silicon is feakin' insane.
Database growth on a mid-sized Mastodon instance is pretty rough. We're at 70GB since our start back in November. Growth appears to be around 4GB/week.
#mastoadmin's: Care to share some stats? I'd love to compare (and brace).
It's time for another Mastodon release. It holds a few patches that I've been waiting for and it's been over a month already since v4.1.0.
Also: 278 commits to main since this release.
Release early, release often.
Day two of my kid having his first phone:
The owl hatched a mini owl.
Also, he rickrolled me by belting the lyrics he found online.
I gave my kid his first phone today. The first thing he does isn’t to watch YouTube, play games of text his friends.
It’s watching livestreams of owls sitting on their nest.
I love that.
