#tootcommunity is back online :partyparrot:

That concludes todays maintenance. Took about two hours.

We moved away from DigitalOcean's managed DB service. There's nothing wrong with it, but provides no possibility for downscaling. With interesting in Mastodon (temporarily?) declining, it makes no sense to pay for something that we're not fully utilising.

New situation: CloudNative PostgreSQL, running on Kubernetes. Allows seamless up- and downscaling.

Went running with both the Apple Watch and the WHOOP fitness tracker. While I really like the WHOOP and how it crunches data, it’s max HR was about 20 BPM off.

Really difficult trusting the conclusions, if the inputted data is wrong to begin with.

Tore my meniscus in September, bringing all training to a sudden halt, had surgery on it in November. Flu in December and just got through COVID last week.

This morning I decided it was enough. Picking up #running again to rebuild my strength and aerobic capacity. It was brutal, but felt really good.

We have some upcoming maintenance that requires us to take #tootcommunity offline to ensure data integrity.

👨‍🔧 Maintenance Window: Wednesday, February 8th
⏱️ Start: 12:00 am EST (05:00 am UTC)
⏱️ End: 04:00 am EST (09:00 am UTC)

We expect the platform to be intermittently unavailable as we migrate our database. Rest assured, all data is safe, and after this window, we will quickly catch up again with the rest of the Fediverse.

I'll be posting updates on our status page: https://status.toot.community

Statistics are showing a lot of people stopped having an interest in Mastodon, at least for #tootcommunity. Since more and more instances are showing up on joinmastodon.org, this means growth is more organic and spread out through the available instances. That's a good thing.

Peak activity for us was at 28.000 active people, now it's down to about 8.000.

The outrage culture is slowly taking over my Mastodon timeline as well. I’m here for genuine human interaction, to learn about someone’s day or favorite hobby. Instead, I get outrage about protests, police, climate, big tech… I don’t care.

Time to start curating my followings more strictly.

A photo recap of where I've been in Spain, for the past two weeks. I love reports like this. Taken from Photos.app on macOS.

Truth time.

This whole being alone on vacation, in a strange country, not speaking the language has been terrifying. I’m constantly pushing against my own discomfort for doing new things like flying and dining alone.

And still, it feels super fulfilling. Experiences that are worthwhile never come easy and I want to train myself in doing so, despite discomfort.

Admittedly though, I’m _really_ looking forward being with my wife, own house and the pets again in a couple of days. 🐱

Here’s a little GoPro compilation of me cruising down the mountain in Spain 🇪🇸

€1069 on Apple.com (NL)

Yet, €1069 is $1159.

What's happening here? This is insane.

Edit: Tax, apparently. #appleoranges.

Doing the #cat thing, so I can test Ivory for iOS. 👋

Got some nice book suggestions in my notifications. Thanks everyone. I'll go through them soon :)
